Crowns and bridges of the past were traditionally made to look good through a process involving porcelain fused to metal. This method became problematic for some patients who experienced metal sensitivity, and over time proved to be aesthetically challenging because as patients aged their gums would naturally recede, revealing dark metal shadows at the top of the gum line. Fortunately, technology has improved and many patients now have options in metal-free crowns and bridges for tooth restoration and replacement.
We are pleased to provide our patients with the latest metal-free tooth restoration technologies including zirconia crowns and bridges.
Zirconia Crowns
This type of metal-free crown aesthetically gives the illusion of natural teeth while providing the strength, comfort, and durability needed to protect and preserve the underlying tooth. Because it is so strong and stable, Dr. Srinivasan will likely recommend zirconia when treating posterior (back) teeth.
A zirconia crown is created by using a polycrystalline ceramic material to form a very strong base. Then a very thin layer of porcelain can be added to the base creating a similar light-reflecting translucency to that of a natural tooth. This porcelain layer is matched in the lab to the color of the surrounding teeth, making this type of crown virtually undetectable.
Zirconia Bridges
If you are seeking the strength of a porcelain-to-metal bridge free from concern over metal sensitivities, and without the inevitable unsightly black shadow seen at the gum line, you may benefit from a metal-free zirconia bridge to restore and rejuvenate your smile.
Constructed of high-strength zirconia, these bridges are one of the strongest available in metal-free options and are highly unlikely to crack or break. However, they do not have the full strength offered by porcelain-to-metal crowns that may be the best route for some patients.
If you are interested in learning more about zirconia crowns or bridges and whether you would be a good candidate, simply call us to schedule an appointment or consultation and Dr. Srinivasan can discuss with you a recommended treatment plan based on your individual needs.
