Teeth Cleaning and Exam
During a routine biannual exam, a dental hygienist cleans your teeth by scraping plaque and tartar off with a small specialty tool. You will rinse your mouth several times during this process. Your hygienist then flosses and polishes your teeth before Dr. Srinivasan inspects your teeth and gums for signs of any oral health problems that require additional follow-up.
Fillings
Your teeth begin to show signs of decay when bacteria bore a hole in the outer enamel. The tooth will require filling material to preserve it. You can opt for a standard silver amalgam filling or a tooth-colored filling. Most people prefer the latter option because the filling material blends in much better, and it is not obvious to others that they have had dental work done.
X-Rays
Dental insurance companies typically pay for one set of bitewing X-rays each year. If you are due for X-rays, a hygienist places a thin piece of cardboard with a tiny camera attached inside your mouth and then snaps a picture. The digital X-rays are available immediately for Dr. Srinivasan to review. Having a set of recent X-rays on file helps to provide a baseline in case a new oral health concern develops in the future.
Tooth Extractions and Wisdom Teeth Removal
You may need a diseased or damaged tooth removed at some point to preserve your oral health. People undergoing orthodontic treatment sometimes need one or more teeth extracted to make room for the other teeth to shift. The development of wisdom teeth, which usually happens in the late teen years, is another reason patients need teeth extracted.
