How a Dental Crown Preserves Your Natural Teeth
Your teeth serve you well, from the pressure of chewing food at least thrice daily to withstanding disease and trauma. Unfortunately, teeth can wear down over time due to severe decay or other dental issues, while others sustain cracks and chips from an injury. The affected tooth needs extra support in these situations. Porcelain crowns in Huntsville, AL, save your teeth from extraction and improve your smile.
What is a Porcelain Crown?
Porcelain is the primary component of dental crowns. If you have a weak, decayed, or damaged tooth, Dr. Jayashree Srinivasan prefers to save it by placing a porcelain crown over it. Because of their design, crowns are appropriate for the back chewing teeth only.
Our dental laboratory creates a customized dental crown for you based on the X-rays, notes, and mold of your teeth sent by Dr. Srinivasan. You should expect to wait about two weeks for the crown to come back from our laboratory. Dr. Srinivasan will fit you with a temporary crown in the meantime.
The Process of Receiving a Porcelain Crown
Before Dr. Srinivasan can place your dental crown, she must remove a portion of your tooth enamel to ensure the crown will fit properly over the tooth. After this part of the procedure, your tooth will look more pointed than flat. You will receive strong pain relievers to ensure that you do not feel any discomfort.
Next, Dr. Srinivasan applies dental adhesive to your tooth and places the crown on top of it. She may use a curing light to help the adhesive dry faster. You should avoid chewing with that tooth for at least a few hours after the procedure.
